November 12, 2024 – The Selection Committee for the College Football Playoff (CFP) released its second rankings of the year on Tuesday evening. The group's Top 25 was officially announced on a live ESPN broadcast. The committee will continue to update the rankings each Tuesday through December 3; the final rankings as well as the playoff match-ups and bowl assignments will be announced on Sunday, December 8 on ESPN.

Based on these rankings (as of today), the College Football Playoff Quarterfinal at the Allstate Sugar Bowl (Wednesday, January 1) would feature No. 3 Texas against the winner of No. 5 Indiana and No. 10 Alabama.
This season will mark the fifth time that the Sugar Bowl has doubled as a College Football Playoff game and its first as a Playoff Quarterfinal in the newly expanded 12-team College Football Playoff. The Sugar Bowl hosted four Playoff Semifinals (2014, 2017, 2020, and 2023 seasons) in the four-team format.
For the 2024 and 2025 seasons, the field of 12 teams will be comprised of the five conference champions ranked highest by the selection committee (no minimum ranking requirement), plus the seven highest-ranked other teams. The four highest-ranked conference champions will be seeded one through four and each will receive a first-round bye. The other eight teams will play in the first round with the higher seeds hosting the lower seeds either on campus or at other sites designated by the higher-seeded institution.
