Turn Back the Clock to 2022: Baylor Turns In Memorable Defensive Performance

Terrel Bernard’s 20-Tackle Effort Earns MVP Honor

Turn Back the Clock 2022NEW ORLEANS (November 10, 2022) – With just over 50 days remaining before the 89th annual Allstate Sugar Bowl, the Sugar Bowl is "turning back the clock" to January 1 of this year when Baylor turned in a memorable defensive performance in a 21-7 victory over Ole Miss in the 88th annual Allstate Sugar Bowl.

Full History Story – 88th Annual Allstate Sugar Bowl

The Baylor-Ole Miss Allstate Sugar Bowl was billed as one of those immovable objects vs. unstoppable forces affairs. Though there were extenuating circumstances, the immovable object, Baylor's stout defense, ruled the day. The Bears registered three interceptions – one for a 96-yard pick six – and 10 sacks in a 21-7 victory over Ole Miss.

It was a tough night for the Rebels, who lost star quarterback Matt Corral to a leg injury in the first quarter. Corral came in as one of the nation's top dual-threat QBs. He never returned, leaving it in the hands of backup Luke Altmyer, a freshman.

The Bears defense held Ole Miss' high-powered offense to 332 yards, well below its season average of 506.7 yards per game.

Bears linebacker Terrel Bernard recorded 20 tackles and had two of the 10 sacks to lead the way defensively. He was honored as the Miller-Digby Award winner, signifying the game's most outstanding player.

Cornerback Al Walcott returned his second-quarter interception 96 yards (a Sugar Bowl record) for the only score of the first half.

Altmyer finally got the Rebels on the board with a 37-yard touchdown pass to Braylon Sanders with 9:13 left in the third quarter. Baylor regained the lead when Monaray Baldwin took a handoff 48 yards on an end-around for the touchdown and a 14-7 lead with 11:14 to play.

On the ensuing possession, safety JT Woods snagged his second INT of the day at the Ole Miss 31 and returned it to the Rebels 15. Five plays later, Gerry Bohanon passed 2 yards to Tyquan Thornton for the touchdown and a 21-7 lead with 7:24 to go. That would be all Baylor would need to persevere.

The Allstate Sugar Bowl has established itself as one of the premier college football bowl games, having hosted 28 national champions, 100 Hall of Fame players, 51 Hall of Fame coaches and 20 Heisman Trophy winners in its 88-year history. The 89th Allstate Sugar Bowl Football Classic, which will feature top teams from the SEC and the Big 12, is scheduled to be played on December 31, 2022. In addition to football, the Sugar Bowl Committee annually invests over $1 million into the community through the hosting and sponsorship of sporting events, awards, scholarships and clinics. Through these efforts, the organization supports and honors thousands of student-athletes each year, while injecting over $2.2 billion into the local economy in the last decade.
