NEW ORLEANS (December 20, 2024) – The University of Notre Dame will face the University of Georgia in the College Football Playoff Quarterfinal at the Allstate Sugar Bowl on Wednesday, January 1, 2025, in the Caesars Superdome. The seventh-seeded Fighting Irish defeated No. 10 Indiana, 27-17, in South Bend on Friday evening in the first-ever College Football Playoff First-Round Game to advance to the Playoff Quarterfinals. Georgia, which earned the No. 2 overall seed after winning the SEC Championship, had a first-round bye.

The Allstate Sugar Bowl is scheduled to kick off at 7:45 p.m. (Central) and will be televised by ESPN.

While the game is officially sold out, the Sugar Bowl Committee encourages fans still looking to purchase tickets to visit Ticketmaster as the official verified resale platform of the 2025 Playoff Quarterfinal at the Allstate Sugar Bowl.

The Allstate Sugar Bowl will be doubling as a College Football Playoff (CFP) game for the fifth time since the CFP was established for the 2014 season. The four previous playoff games were CFP Semifinals and combined for nearly 90 million worldwide viewers on ESPN's platforms.

"We are thrilled to have the opportunity to host two schools that have created so many great Sugar Bowl memories in their distinguished histories," said Walter Becker, the President of the Sugar Bowl Committee. "As both Georgia and Notre Dame know, the unique City of New Orleans is the perfect place to celebrate college football. The mission of the Sugar Bowl is to promote tourism in this region through outstanding athletic events and we are so fortunate to host these two teams with their passionate fan bases."

This season marks the first year of the new 12-team format for the CFP. The four highest-ranked conference champions, including Georgia, are seeded one through four and have received first-round byes. There will be three more CFP First-Round Games on Saturday with the winners advancing to Playoff Quarterfinals at the Fiesta Bowl, the Peach Bowl, and the Rose Bowl.

"It's an honor for the Sugar Bowl Committee to be a part of the College Football Playoff," said Jeff Hundley, the chief executive officer of the Allstate Sugar Bowl. "This year's match-up features two of college football's elite. Georgia and Notre Dame have both realized historic moments with the Bowl – Notre Dame won a national championship here in the Sugar Bowl in 1973; and eight years later these same two teams met in the Sugar Bowl with Georgia earning the national title. Now we get a tremendous rematch for our organization's first-ever College Football Playoff Quarterfinal. We're so proud to do our part in keeping New Orleans at the pinnacle of the college football world."

The winner of this year's game, the 91st annual Sugar Bowl Classic, will advance to the CFP Semifinal at the Orange Bowl. This year's CFP National Championship will be played on Monday, January 20, in Atlanta.

Georgia (11-2, 6-2 SEC) earned the No. 2 seed from the College Football Playoff Selection Committee following its 22-19 overtime victory over Texas in the SEC Championship game on December 7. The Bulldogs will be the 96th conference champion to play in the Sugar Bowl in its 91-year history. Georgia will be making its 12th Sugar Bowl appearance with an all-time mark of 5-6.

Notre Dame (12-1) will be making its fifth Sugar Bowl appearance and its first since 2007. On December 31, 1973, the Fighting Irish defeated Alabama, 24-23, in one of the greatest college football showdowns in history.

One of the more memorable Sugar Bowls of all-time featured both Notre Dame and Georgia as the top-ranked Bulldogs capped a perfect season in the 1981 Sugar Bowl with a thrilling 17-10 victory over the Fighting Irish.

Georgia has recorded 30 seasons with 10 or more victories, including each of the past five years. This will be the 63rd bowl appearance for Georgia; it has an all-time bowl mark of 38-21-3. Eight of those bowl appearances have come under the direction of head coach Kirby Smart, who has posted a 7-1 bowl record in his nine years at the helm of the Bulldogs.

Notre Dame posted its 24th season with double-digit victories this year. The Fighting Irish will be making their 43rd bowl trip with an overall record of 21-21. Head coach Marcus Freeman, in his third year at the helm of the storied program, led his squad to back-to-back bowl victories in his first two seasons. At 38-years old (38 years, 356 days), Freeman will be the youngest Sugar Bowl coach since Jackie Sherrill (38 years, 33 days) brought the University of Pittsburgh to New Orleans on Jan. 1, 1982 – and defeated the Georgia Bulldogs, 24-20.

Georgia will be making its 40th trip to Louisiana – the Bulldogs have a 18-20-1 record in the Pelican State with a 6-7 record in New Orleans against Tulane, a 5-6-1 mark against LSU in Baton Rouge, a 2-2 Sugar Bowl record (the 2006 Sugar Bowl was played in Atlanta), and a 2-2 record in the Independence Bowl in Shreveport.

Notre Dame has played 13 games in Louisiana, recording a mark of 8-5. The Fighting Irish have a perfect 4-0 record against Tulane in New Orleans and are 2-2 in the Sugar Bowl. They are 2-2 all-time against LSU in Baton Rouge and also lost their only appearance in the Independence Bowl (1997).

The Allstate Sugar Bowl has established itself as one of the premier college football bowl games, having hosted 29 national champions, 107 Hall of Fame players, 52 Hall of Fame coaches and 21 Heisman Trophy winners in its 90-year history. In addition to football, the Sugar Bowl Committee annually invests over $1 million into the community through the hosting and sponsorship of sporting events, awards, scholarships and clinics. Through these efforts, the organization supports and honors thousands of student-athletes each year, while injecting over $2.5 billion into the local economy in the last decade.
