METAIRIE, La. – Catholic High School, from Baton Rouge, turned in a terrific defensive performance to defeat Jesuit High School, 8-2, in a hard-fought, physical showdown for the Allstate Sugar Bowl Division 1 Lacrosse State Championship on Sunday at Joe Yenni Stadium.
Jesuit's B team had defeated Holy Cross in the Allstate Sugar Bowl Division 2 Lacrosse State Championship earlier in the day. Division 2 included newer high school lacrosse programs as well as secondary (junior varsity) teams from some of the established high school programs in the state.
The Division 1 Championship Most Valuable Players were Grant Schliewe (offense) and Tommy Blanchard (defense) from Catholic. The Division 2 MVPS were Adam Dalton (offense) and Ben Brockhoff (defense) from Jesuit.
In the Division 1 Semifinals on Friday, Catholic defeated Newman, while Jesuit topped St. Thomas More from Lafayette, in a 7-6 overtime thriller.
The Allstate Sugar Bowl has been a lacrosse leader in Louisiana since first hosting a high school tournament in 2007. The Allstate Sugar Bowl Lacrosse Classic was scheduled annually until the COVID-19 pandemic. For 2022, the Bowl opted to sponsor the high school championships for the first time.
The Allstate Sugar Bowl has established itself as one of the premier college football bowl games, having hosted 28 national champions, 100 Hall of Fame players, 51 Hall of Fame coaches and 20 Heisman Trophy winners in its 88-year history. The 89th annual Sugar Bowl Classic is scheduled to be played on Saturday, December 31, 2022. In addition to football, the Sugar Bowl Committee annually invests over $1 million into the community through the hosting and sponsorship of sporting events, awards, scholarships and clinics. Through these efforts, the organization supports and honors thousands of student-athletes each year, while injecting over $2.2 billion into the local economy in the last decade.
