Junior delivers fourth 300 yard game in SEC win

Will RogersNEW ORLEANS October 6, 2022) – Will Rogers, a junior from Mississippi State University, has been selected as the Manning Award Quarterback of the Week. This is Rogers second honor this season, third overall, as he beat out seven other Manning Award Stars of the Week in the Allstate Sugar Bowl's Facebook contest.

Rogers, a Brandon, Miss., native, completed 31-of-45 passes for 329 yards and three touchdowns as the Bulldogs get a conference win with a 42-24 defeat of No. 17 Texas A&M. This marks Rogers fourth 300-yard game of the season and he leads the nation in passing yards (8,430) and is third in passing touchdowns (66).

Rogers has a chance to etch his name at the top of school and conference record books this season as his 915 career completions are just six shy of the current SEC record set by Georgia's Aaron Murray (2010-13). He is also four passing touchdowns shy of Dak Prescott's (2012-15) MSU career record (70).

The No. 23 Bulldogs will again play in SEC and top 25 action as they host No. 25 Arkansas for their homecoming game on Saturday at 11 a.m. CT on SEC Network.

The closest competition for Rogers and his Bulldog supporters in the Facebook voting contest came from Frank Harris of UTSA and Kansas State's Adrian Martinez. Harris completed 27-of-36 passes for 414 yards and two touchdowns, while also running for a pair of scores, leading the Roadrunners to a 45-20 C-USA road win over Middle Tennessee. He also set a school record for single-game passing yards. Martinez completed 12-of-19 passes for 116 yards with one touchdown through the air. He rushed 12 times for 171 yards and three touchdowns, including a 69-yard dash early in the fourth quarter to put the Wildcats on top for good as they take down Texas Tech, 37-28, in Big 12 play.

While the Manning Award selected 30 quarterbacks for its preseason Watch List, additional quarterbacks are expected to be added to the Watch List later in the season. Ten finalists will be selected and the winner is scheduled to be announced following the College Football Playoff National Championship.

In its first 18 years, the Manning Award has recognized the top names in college football. It has honored quarterbacks from 13 different schools and from four different conferences. The Southeastern Conference (Bryce Young, Joe Burrow, Mac Jones, Johnny Manziel, Cam Newton, JaMarcus Russell and Tim Tebow) leads the way with seven Manning Award honorees, while the Big 12 Conference (Kyler Murray, Baker Mayfield, Vince Young, Colt McCoy and Robert Griffin III) has had five winners. The Atlantic Coast Conference (Deshaun Watson twice, Matt Ryan and Jameis Winston) has had four Manning Award winners. Alabama (B. Young and Jones) joins LSU (Burrow and Russell), Oklahoma (Murray and Mayfield) and Texas (McCoy and V. Young) as the only schools with two different winners.

All the Manning Award winners follow in the footsteps of the Mannings themselves. In college, Archie, Peyton and Eli Manning combined for over 25,000 passing yards and 201 touchdowns while playing in 10 bowl games and earning four bowl MVP awards. Archie was the No. 2 pick in the NFL Draft, while both Peyton and Eli were selected No. 1 overall.
