Powers, a linebacker and captain of the John Curtis football team, was selected as the Sugar Bowl Athlete of the Month for October of 1989. Powers, a 6-1, 215-pound senior, made 40 solo tackles and had 40 assists as the Patriots went 4-0 in October.
