Guy Hubert - August 1979 Athlete of the Month

Hubert, the 20-year-old shortstop of NORD-Candies, was selected as the Sugar Bowl Athlete of the Month for August of 1979. Hubert keyed NORD-Candies' run to a third-place finish in the All-American Amateur Baseball Association national tournament in Johnstown, Pa. He collected 11 hits in 21 at bats in the tournament for a .524 average, which was second-best in the national competition. He also drove in seven runs and scored six others. Hubert also established a consecutive hit record for the tournament, going six-for-six against Lansing, Mich., while driving home five runs. When not playing shortstop, Hubert also pitched for NORD-Candies during the regular season and compiled a 4-1 record. He pitched in one game during the championship tournament and lost a decision to Detroit.Â
Hubert is a graduate of East Jefferson High School and is currently a student at Delgado Junior College, where he plays under NORD-Candies coach Rags Scheuermann.
Hubert beat out a pair of Odeco Drillers, the First District American Legion team, for the monthly award - pitcher Dickie Wentz and catcher Steve Riley.
