Higgins, the standout first baseman for the UNO baseball team, was selected as the Sugar Bowl Athlete of the Month for April of 1984. Higgins was hitting .389 with 21 home runs at the time of his selection.

He edged out John Curtis track star Frank Maza to collect the honor.
