Roger Gorumba - July 1979 Athlete of the Month

Gorumba, a physical fitness buff for most of hsi 37 years, was selected as the Sugar Bowl Athlete of the Month for July of 1979. Gorumba, a graduate of Warren Easton and currently director of security for Avondale Shipyard, was cited for his performance at the National AAU weightlifting competition in Los Angeles. Competing in the 148 3/4-pound weight class, he bench-pressed 405 pounds to smash the exisiting world record. He returned later in the day to erase that mark with a press of 411 pounds.
