Williams, the senior point guard for Shaw, was selected as the Sugar Bowl Athlete of the Month for March of 1989. The school's all-time scoring leader, Williams led Shaw to their first state championship in March. 

He edged Tulane tennis caption Christy Kocham in the balloting, Kocham was undefeated in singles in March with eight straight victories.
