White, the star quarterback for the Country Day football team, was selected as the Sugar Bowl Athlete of the Month for September of 1984. White completed 87-of-151 passes for 1,305 yards and 17 touchdowns in leading the Cajuns to a 4-1 record.

Other nominees included SMU running back Reggie Dupard, Louisiana Tech linebacker Doug "Tank" Landry, East Jefferson defensive back Randy Hilliard, and LSU running back Garry James.
