Wyatt Washington - September 1975 Athlete of the Month
Football, Tulane University
Washington, a three-year starter for the Green Wave football team, was named the Sugar Bowl Athlete of the Month for September of 1975. Washington had a huge performance in a win over Clemson as he intercepted three passes and returned them for 106 yards. Two of the thefts stopped Clemson drives and the other resulted in a 76-yard touchdown return for what proved to be the game-winning points in the 17-13 upset.
"I was certainly an All-American performance," Tulane coach Bernie Ellender said. "He controlled everything in his area."
Washington's 106 return yards remain atop the NCAA statistics.
Washington, a senior from Jackson, Miss., was selected over East Jefferson's Perry Neal who gained 245 yards in the Warriors' 9-0 win over Bonnabel and Tulane teammate Buddy Gilbert. Gilbert was nominated for his performances against both Ole Miss and Syracuse.
