Thiel, a former track star at Holy Cross High School and Southeastern Louisiana, was selected as the Sugar Bowl Athlete of the Month for June of 1981. Thiel won three medals in the Track & Field Association Masters meet in Atlanta in June. He won the gold medal in the 200-meter dash with a time of 23 seconds, placed second with a 52.6 in the 400-meters and was third in the 100-meter dash with a time of 11.2.
