Mitchell, the standout quarterback for John Ehret High School, was selected as the Sugar Bowl Athlete of the Month for December of 1981. Mitchell passed for 174 yards and scored a touchdown to lead the Patriots to a 32-13 victory over Covington to win the Class AAAA state championship on Dec. 12.
