Franklin, the sophomore sprinter for the Southern University of New Orleans track team, was selected as the Sugar Bowl Athlete of the Month for May of 1975. Franklin was the Most Valuable Performer at the NCAA Division III Outdoor Track & Field Championships in Cleveland as he led the Black Knights to the national championship. He won the 100-yard dash in 9.83, took the 220 in 21.1 seconds, and anchored the winning 440-relay team, triumphing in 41.57.
