Davis, a record-setting sprinter for the SUNO track team, was selected as the Sugar Bowl Athlete of the Month for May of 1980. Davis was honored for his individual and team performances at the NCAA Division III Outdoor Track & Field Championships in Naperville, Ill. The Black Knights, three-time national champions, finished third behind his efforts. He twice broke the NCAA Division III record in the 400-meter dash. He first cracked the 46.70 mark in the qualifying heat with a time of 46.61, then returned in the finals to lower his record to 46.34.
As the anchor man on the 1600-meter relay team, Davis helped his SUNO teammates establish another pair of records. They broke the Division III mark of 3:40.74 with a time of 3:10.47 in the qualifying heats, then sliced that to 3:09.66 in the fnals. Davis' running mates were Michael Woods, Lloyd Langford, and Delwin Davis.
