Traun Smith - June 1998 Athlete of the Month
Track & Field, Destrehan High School
Smith, a dual-sport standout at Destrehan High School, was selected as the Sugar Bowl Athlete of the Month for June of 1998. Smith established himself as one of the nation's top triple jumpers in June. After a setting a Louisiana state high school record of 50 feet, 11 inches in May, Smith was invited to participate in two national meets in June. At the Golden West Invitational in Sacramento, he jumped 47-0 to finish sixth. Later that month, he jumped 47-0 feet at the National High School Scholastic Meet in North Carolina to finish fourth. He is also a running back on the Destrehan football team.
