Faulk, a graduate of Carver High and a star football player at San Diego State, was named the Sugar Bowl Athlete of the Month for September of 1991. During the month, Faulk carried 88 times and gained 633 yards with 11 touchdowns. In his second collegiate game on Sept. 14, he ran for 386 yards and seven touchdowns (both NCAA records for freshman) in a win over Pacific.
