Louisiana Tech guard Kim Mulkey shared the 1983 Outstanding Female Athlete for the State of Louisiana with Vandebilt Catholic softball pitcher Michel Broussard. The honors are selected by the Sugar Bowl's Sports Awards Committee.
Mulkey, a 5'4'' senior, has earned the respect of teammates, fans, and opponents for her ball handling with the Lady Techsters. Known for getting the ball to closely guarded teammates, Mulkey has been considered the best penetrating guard in the school's history, and one of the finest in the country since her arrival in Ruston.
In 1983, Mulkey averaged 6.45 assists and ranks second on the Tech all time list in that category. In addition to contributing an average of 6.3 points per game in 1983, she used her remarkable ability to get the ball to the open player, thus allowing scoring by her teammates. Her single game high in assists for '83 was 11, which she reached on two occasions--including the NCAA title game against Southern Cal.
The New Orleans Sports Awards Committee began in 1957 when James Collins spearheaded a group of sports journalists to form a sports awards committee to immortalize local sports history. For 13 years, the committee honored local athletes each month. In 1970, the Sugar Bowl stepped in to sponsor and revitalize the committee, leading to the creation of the New Orleans Sports Hall of Fame in 1971, honoring 10 legends from the Crescent City in its first induction class. While adding the responsibility of selecting Hall of Famers, the committee has continued to recognize Sugar Bowl Athletes of the Month.
