Michel Broussard, Vandebilt Catholic Softball
Outstanding Female Athlete, Louisiana, 1983
Vandebilt Catholic softball pitcher Michel Broussard shared the 1983 Outstanding Female Athlete for the State of Louisiana with Louisiana Tech guard Kim Mulkey. The honors are selected by the Sugar Bowl's Sports Awards Committee.
Broussard has rewritten the record books not only at her Houma high school, but nationally. The winningest female softball pitcher in the history of the sport at the high school level, she has set national records in both career victories, going 89-0 in her four years at Vandebilt, and consecutive victories.
Michel bested the old mark for career wins by 25 games, and topped the consecutive win streak by an incredible 57 games. Only three other females have won more games than 50 during their high school careers before Broussard. With Broussard on the mound, Vandebilt won four straight state championships.
The New Orleans Sports Awards Committee began in 1957 when James Collins spearheaded a group of sports journalists to form a sports awards committee to immortalize local sports history. For 13 years, the committee honored local athletes each month. In 1970, the Sugar Bowl stepped in to sponsor and revitalize the committee, leading to the creation of the New Orleans Sports Hall of Fame in 1971, honoring 10 legends from the Crescent City in its first induction class. While adding the responsibility of selecting Hall of Famers, the committee has continued to recognize Sugar Bowl Athletes of the Month.
