The Bowl also makes a direct impact on young local students through a variety of scholarship opportunities while also providing significant funding to support New Orleans Public Schools and their efforts around teacher retention and recruitment as well as principal professional development.

Allstate Sugar Bowl & Extra Yard for Teachers

The Allstate Sugar Bowl spearheaded New Orleans’ bid effort for the 2020 College Football Playoff (CFP) National Championship and was also the leader of the host committee. A major focus of the host committee’s efforts was the support of teachers. In conjunction with the College Football Playoff (CFP) Foundation’s Extra Yard For Teachers initiative, the Bowl continues to be an integral part of a multimillion-dollar partnership which focuses on recruiting and retaining quality teachers for New Orleans Public Schools. The partnership, with a major assist from Entergy, also coordinates an unprecedented effort to give much-deserved recognition to teachers in the region. All 87 New Orleans public schools were visited for teacher-recognition lunches, a free celebratory event was hosted for over 500 teachers at Rock ‘N’ Bowl and teachers received free access to other events, including a Tulane football game, a 5K road race and a teacher “summit” held in conjunction with the 2020 CFP National Championship in New Orleans.

 

For The Teachers – Game Program Feature Story

Although the 2020 College Football Playoff National Championship Game has passed, the work here has been ongoing, providing financial support for student teacher/mentor programs, supporting the building of a teacher pipeline from local universities into New Orleans Public Schools and funding a school principal development program to provide support and build up those currently in the role.  

During the COVID-19 Pandemic, the Sugar Bowl Committee, along with the College Football Playoff Foundation and additional local partners, funded wifi hotspots for New Orleans Public School students in need of internet access, ensuring that every student was able to attend school, virtually.

In August of 2020, with the COVID-19 severely limiting teachers, Hurricane Laura devastated the Lake Charles, La., area. Teachers found themselves having to readjust their teaching plan, once again, all while taking care of themselves and their families. As part of the CFP’s Extra Yard for Teachers Week, the Allstate Sugar Bowl and the CFP Foundation invited two top area teachers for a virtual call to thank them for their efforts. Sugar Bowl CEO Jeff Hundley then surprised the teachers by announcing the funding of every DonorsChoose project in Lake Charles and Calcasieu Parish, totaling almost $10,000.

Allstate Sugar Bowl NFF Scholar-Athlete Scholarships
Four $10,000 Scholarships, One $20,000 Scholarship

Each spring, the Allstate Sugar Bowl recognizes top football scholar-athletes from the Greater New Orleans area as part of its sponsorship of the New Orleans Chapter of the National Football Foundation and College Football Hall of Fame. Young men are nominated by their coaches and guidance counselors to be honored at the annual luncheon. After being notified of their selection as an Allstate Sugar Bowl Scholar-Athlete, honorees have the opportunity to submit an essay to the Allstate Sugar Bowl Committee stating why they are deserving of one of the prestigious Allstate Sugar Bowl Scholarships. The Bowl has awarded over $700,000 in National Football Foundation scholarship money (through 2024).

Six $10,000 Scholarships

The Allstate Sugar Bowl partners with the Greater New Orleans Sports Awards Committee to recognize outstanding female student-athletes in the New Orleans area. The scholarships are presented to the deserving young women as part of the Greater New Orleans Sports Hall of Fame/Corbett Awards Banquet in early August. Since 2020, the Sugar Bowl Committee has given out $230,000 in Women in Sport Scholarships to 25 deserving student athletes (through 2024).

Four $2,500 Scholarships

The Allstate Sugar Bowl is the title sponsor of the Tommy Moore Memorial Junior Golf Championship each December. The event is put on by the Kelly Gibson Foundation, which awards multiple scholarships to Kelly Gibson Junior Golf Tour members at its annual banquet in the summer. The Bowl has awarded $145,000 in junior golf scholarship money (through 2024).

Teach For America New Orleans

The Allstate Sugar Bowl has worked in conjunction with the College Football Playoff (CFP) Foundation to provide significant financial assistance to Teach For America New Orleans. Donations totaling nearly a quarter of a million dollars have directly funded the efforts of the organization.

“The Sugar Bowl Committee is proud to partner with the College Football Playoff in making an investment in the educations of New Orleans’ young people,” said Stanley Cohn, former President of the Sugar Bowl Committee. “Every boy and girl, regardless of economics, deserves the chance to learn in a positive environment. We hope our donation will enable Teach For America to enhance the great work its already doing in New Orleans.”

Teach For America works with local communities to expand educational opportunities for children facing the challenges of poverty. Teach For America has three components to its approach: to enlist diverse individuals to become teachers and life-long advocates in low-income communities; to train members of its teaching corps to be effective leaders in the classroom; and to mobilize as many individuals as possible to strengthen the movement for educational excellence.

The donations to Teach For America have augmented the efforts to strengthen education in low-income areas of the city.
