William H. “Bill” Kirchem was a star football player at both the prep and collegiate levels in New Orleans in the 1930s. An all-state selection as a Warren Easton lineman in 1934 and 1935, the fleet-footed Kirchem also captured the state 100-yard dash title while at Warren Easton.

He continued his education and his football career at Tulane, letting for three years with the Green Wave and earning All-SEC honors at tackle twice. He also won the SEC hurdles title and the SEC heavyweight boxing title.

Though he was selected by the Washington Redskins in the fifth round of the 1940 NFL Draft, Kirchem opted to become a teacher and coach in the Orleans Parish public school system, where he stayed for 30 years.
