Johnny Oelkers earned all-state and All-Southern honors in football and was also a shot-put and discus champion at Warren Easton High School. He went on to star in track and football (1927-29) at Tulane University before becoming a member of the Green Wave coaching staff for over 40 years (1934-78).

He served as the coach of the U.S. Track and Field Team in 1962 and helped coach the 1968 U.S. Olympic team in the Mexico City Summer Olympics.

Oelkers was inducted into the Tulane Athletics Hall of Fame in 1978.
