Earl J. “Bubba” Porche arrived at Tulane from the Navy in 1946 to serve as an assistant athletic trainer. In 1949, he was elevated to head athletic trainer and he established himself as a New Orleans legend, holding that position until his death in 1985.
In addition to his Tulane duties, he served as athletic trainer at the annual Blue-Gray game, for the U.S. Track Team that competed in three meets in Europe in 1967 and and for the Pan-American Games in 1971.
Porche is also a member of the National Athletic Trainers Association Hall of Fame, the Southeast Athletic Trainers Association Hall of Fame and the Tulane Athletics Hall of Fame (1982). The Tulane Athletic Training Room is named for Porche and the Louisiana Athletic Trainers Association presents the Earl “Bubba” Porche College Student Achievement Award” to the top student athletic trainer in the state each year.
Porche died of a heart attack on June 15, 1985 at the age of 62.
