Herman Roth began his full-time baseball career at the age of 14 with the semipro Grand Dukes. He played for the independent Pensacola Giants in 1920 and reached the Negro Major Leagues in 1923. He played for the Chicago American Giants, the Milwaukee Bears, the Detroit Stars and the Birmingham Black Barons over a three-year stretch from 1923-25.

Roth returned to New Orleans in 1926 to play for the New Orleans Algiers and the Caulfield Ads – he captained the Caulfield team that won its first Negro Southern League championship during the 1926-29 era.

Born in New Orleans on March 6, 1896, Roth died on April 8, 1988 at the age of 92, also in New Orleans.
