Doug Watters was one of the top tennis players in the country during his college days at Tulane. He won three straight Southern Intercollegiate Championships in singles and doubles competition at Tulane University, a feat never before or since duplicated.

In addition to capturing the Southern singles and doubles, he also won the Rhode Island singles and doubles and Tennessee State Championships.

He advanced to the finals of the U.S. Lawn Tennis Association (now the USTA) championships (now the US Open) two straight years.

Watters also served as a charter member of the Mid-Winter Sports Association, which became the Sugar Bowl Committee. He was a member of the Sugar Bowl for 54 years.

In 1980, he was elected to the Tulane Athletics Hall of Fame.
