Avondale, La. (December 23, 2024) — Eighty-four top-ranked junior golfers from across the nation competed in the 2024 Allstate Sugar Bowl Tommy Moore Memorial on December 22-23 at TPC Louisiana, home of the PGA TOUR's Zurich Classic of New Orleans. Participants from 17 states and three countries were put to the test with cold and windy conditions and a challenging course.
Jamison Louie of Sugar Land, Texas, was the 2024 Allstate Sugar Bowl Tommy Moore Memorial Champion in the Girls 13-18 Division. Louie entered the final round even par and one stroke clear of the field. The second round brought windy conditions, but Louie remained consistent, shooting one-over par 73 to clinch the victory by one shot over Darby Hancock of Lakeland, Fla., with Jade Neves of New Orleans finishing in third.
"It feels great, this one means a lot," Louie said. "It is my first win in a while, and you just need that confidence sometimes. I worked really hard on breathing and staying in the moment, going in strong and not thinking about any expectations and going out and getting some birdies. I'd like to thank Kelly Gibson and the Foundation for putting on a great tournament and thank my parents and coaches for supporting me in all that I do."
Mason An of Houston, Texas, won the championship in the Boys 13-18 Division. After a one-under par 71 in round one, An entered the final round two strokes behind first-round leader Chase Duncan of Raleigh, N.C. The high school freshman rode back-to-back under-par rounds to erase the deficit and claim the 14th Allstate Sugar Bowl Tommy Moore Memorial Championship by one shot. Ainslie Stanford III of Edmond, Okla., was the runner-up followed by Dakota Cunningham of Olive Branch, Miss.
"The conditions were tough, but I did a good job of flighting down my shots and missed in the right spots," An said. "Scrambling was big for me all weekend; I was able to avoid the bigger numbers, and I liked that bogeys were my big mistakes. Going into the round I knew that I was a few shots back of the leader, but I don't really look at leaderboards when I play, I just kind of played my game one shot at a time and stayed in the present."
The Allstate Sugar Bowl is the presenting sponsor of the 36-hole event. The 91st Annual Allstate Sugar Bowl Football Classic is scheduled to be played on Wednesday, January 1st, as No. 2 Georgia and No. 7 Notre Dame face off in Caesars Superdome with the winner advancing to the College Football Playoff Semifinals at the Orange Bowl on Thursday, January 9th.
The Allstate Sugar Bowl has established itself as one of the premier college football bowl games, having hosted 29 national champions, 107 Hall of Fame players, 52 Hall of Fame coaches and 21 Heisman Trophy winners in its 90-year history. In addition to football, the Sugar Bowl Committee annually invests over $1 million into the community through the hosting and sponsorship of sporting events, awards, scholarships and clinics. Through these efforts, the organization supports and honors thousands of student-athletes each year, while injecting over $2.5 billion into the local economy in the last decade.
The golf tournament is named in honor of Tommy Moore, who was the most accomplished junior golfer to ever emerge from the New Orleans area. In 1980, Tommy was ranked #1 in the Golf Digest Junior World Rankings and went on to have a decorated collegiate career at Oklahoma State University where he was an All-American, National Champion, and Academic All-American. After playing on the PGA TOUR for three seasons, Tommy Moore's life was cut short at the young age of 35 due to a rare blood disease. In his memory, the Kelly Gibson Foundation is proud to partner with the Allstate Sugar Bowl to host a national event that recognizes the impact Tommy made on junior golf and the New Orleans community. This is the 14th year that the Kelly Gibson Foundation has produced the Allstate Sugar Bowl Tommy Moore Memorial.
The Kelly Gibson Foundation was founded as Feed the Relief, Inc. by Kelly and Elizabeth Gibson in September of 2005 with the idea of providing necessary support for the frontline first responders to Hurricane Katrina. In 2010, Feed the Relief, a 501(c)3 corporation, changed its name to the Kelly Gibson Foundation, and expanded its scope to enrich the lives of children through athletics. Their mission is to provide support to military personnel and first responders, with a focus on youth athletics. For more information, please visit www.kellygibsonfoundation.org.
