NEW ORLEANS (September 26, 2023) – The Allstate Sugar Bowl has announced this week's
Manning Award Futures – four local high school quarterbacks who turned in outstanding performances on the football field this past weekend. The recognition is entitled "Futures" as these high school stars are potential future candidates for the
Manning Award, which recognizes the top collegiate quarterback in the nation on an annual basis. It was created by the Allstate Sugar Bowl in 2004 to honor the college football accomplishments of Archie, Peyton and Eli Manning.
The Sugar Bowl has had the opportunity to recognize 69 quarterbacks from 38 different high schools since the honor's inception in 2020.
Manning Award Futures – High School QBs of the Week, 9/26/23:
Cole Canatella, Holy Cross (15-of-16, 305 total yards, 4 TDs)
Canatella completed his first 14 passes of the game and led the Tigers to touchdowns on their first three drives as they rolled past Rummel, 49-28, at Tad Gormley Stadium on Friday.
Jackson Fields, Destrehan (15-of-18, 352 total yards, 5 TDs)
Fields, a sophomore, led the Wildcats to 28 first-half points as they cruised to an impressive 47-11 District 7-5A victory over Hahnville on Friday night.
Eli Friend, Newman (12-of-17, 301 total yards, 6 TDs)
Friend turned in an impressive performance in a 49-31 victory over defending Non-Select Division III state champion Many as he threw for four touchdowns and ran for two more on Friday at Michael Lupin Field to keep the Greenies undefeated.
Brennan Keim, St. Paul's (9-of-19, 224 total yards, 3 TDs)
Keim scored on a 61-yard run in the third quarter to tie the game at 7 and then added another rushing score and a 43-yard TD pass in the fourth as the Wolves pulled away for a 28-7 District 6-5A win over Slidell on Friday.
The
Allstate Sugar Bowl has established itself as one of the premier college football bowl games, having hosted 28 national champions, 103 Hall of Fame players, 52 Hall of Fame coaches and 21 Heisman Trophy winners in its 89-year history. The 90th Allstate Sugar Bowl Football Classic, which will double as a College Football Playoff Semifinal, is scheduled to be played on January 1, 2024. In addition to football, the Sugar Bowl Committee annually invests over $1 million into the community through the hosting and sponsorship of sporting events, awards, scholarships and clinics. Through these efforts, the organization supports and honors thousands of student-athletes each year, while injecting nearly $2.4 billion into the local economy in the last decade.
