MANDEVILLE (November 6, 2022) – Jesuit High School won its 11th straight boys' championship at the Allstate Sugar Bowl Metro Swimming Championships held on Friday and Sunday at Franco's Athletic Club. Dominican earned the title in the girls' division, it's second straight metro championship. The event concluded on Sunday due to heavy rains on Saturday.
On the boys' side, Jesuit dominated with 396 points – while the championship was the Blue Jays' 11th straight in the Allstate Sugar Bowl-sponsored event, they have actually captured metro championships for 39 straight competitions (there was no championship in 2020 due to COVID-19). Destrehan was second with 222 points and St. Paul's took third with 215.33 points. Brother Martin (157.33) and Fontainebleau (148) round out the top five.
For the girls, Dominican posted 391 points while St. Scholastica was second with 272 points. Mount Carmel (244), Northshore (221) and E.D. White (163) rounded out the top five.
Calix Hammett, a junior from Rummel was the outstanding boys swimmer of the meet after winning both the 50- and 100-yard freestyle events. The outstanding girls swimmer was Mady Hill from Pope John Paull II. Hill also won two events – earning titles in the 50 freestyle and the 100 butterfly. Other two-event winners included St. Scholastica sophomore Gabby Hall in the 100 and 200 freestyle and Jesuit senior Joseph Capo in the 200 individual medley and 500 freestyle.
The Sugar Bowl Metro High School Championship is the premier swimming event for high school athletes in the metropolitan area. The popularity and significance of the event exceeds that of the city and state championship meets as it includes the schools of all five classes of LHSAA, including Catholic, public and private schools – ensuring that the best swimmers compete against each other, regardless of classification. The meet includes schools not only from New Orleans but also from the Northshore and other metropolitan areas.
The event featured a total of 40 teams (boys and girls) and almost 350 individual swimmers participating.
