The Manning Award was created by the Allstate Sugar Bowl in 2004 to honor the college football accomplishments of Archie, Peyton and Eli Manning. It is the only quarterback award that includes the candidates' bowl performances in its balloting. Since the Manning Award started recognizing Stars of the Week in 2011, 491 different quarterbacks from 132 schools have been recognized. Sixty-one quarterbacks from 58 schools were honored in 2022.
This week's eight Manning Award Stars of the Week are:
Brady Cook, Missouri, (16-of-26, 242 yards, 1 TD, 0 INT, QBR: 80.1)
Cook also runs for a career-high 138 yards and a touchdown to set a career best for total yards (380) as the Tigers hold off Arkansas, 29-27, for a key SEC victory that makes them bowl eligible.
Riley Leonard, Duke (29-of-41, 391 yards, 4 TD, 1 INT, QBR: 77.3)
Leonard, who tallies a career-high for passing yards, completes a 20-yard TD pass with just over two minutes remaining as the Blue Devils upend Wake Forest, 34-31, in ACC action.
J.J. McCarthy, Michigan (12-of-24, 263 yards, 3 TD, 0 INT, QBR: 92.6)
McCarthy, who also runs for a touchdown, sets the tone early, connecting on TD passes of 69 and 75 yards to get the Wolverines rolling on route to a 45-23 road win over No. 2 Ohio State to clinch a berth in the Big Ten Championship game.
Diego Pavia, New Mexico State (16-of-21, 214 yards, 3 TD, 0 INT, QBR: 97.7)
Pavia, who also runs for 125 yards and three more touchdowns, registers career-highs in nearly every category (and season highs for the Aggies) as the 24-point underdog Aggies roll to a 49-14 road victory over Liberty.
Michael Penix, Jr., Washington (25-of-43, 485 yards, 3 TD, 1 INT, QBR: 96.3)
Penix, who adds a pair of rushing touchdowns, connects on two long TD strikes (47 yards and 75 yards) as he leads the Huskies to a 51-33 Pac-12 win over Washington State in the Apple Cup rivalry game.
Tyler Shough, Texas Tech (31-of-50, 436 yards, 2 TD, 1 INT, QBR: 79.6)
Shough connects on a 15-yard TD pass late in the third quarter to help the Red Raiders take their first lead after trailing by 18, directs a 50-yard drive to close regulation with a game-tying field goal, and then gets Texas Tech in place for the game-winning field goal in overtime of a 51-48 Big 12 win over Oklahoma.
Kyle Vantrease, Georgia Southern (34-of-51, 385 yards, 3 TD, 1 INT, QBR: 77.4)
Vantrease runs for a touchdown with 4:22 to go in regulation to knot the game at 38 and then in overtime, connects on a 4-yard TD pass and a game-winning 25-yard TD pass as the Eagles top App State, 51-48.
Caleb Williams, USC (18-of-22, 232 yards, 1 TD, 0 INT, QBR: 97.6)
Williams, who also runs for three touchdowns, sets school-records for total touchdowns (44) and for quarterback rushing yards (351) as he turns in a dazzling performance to lead the Trojans to a 38-27 win over No. 15 Notre Dame.
While the Manning Award selected 30 quarterbacks for its preseason
Watch List and then made 12
midseason additions in October, all quarterbacks remain eligible for the honor. Ten finalists will be selected and the winner is scheduled to be announced following the College Football Playoff National Championship.
In its first 18 years, the Manning Award has recognized the top names in college football. It has honored quarterbacks from 13 different schools and from four different conferences. The Southeastern Conference (Bryce Young, Joe Burrow, Mac Jones, Johnny Manziel, Cam Newton, JaMarcus Russell and Tim Tebow) leads the way with seven Manning Award honorees, while the Big 12 Conference (Kyler Murray, Baker Mayfield, Vince Young, Colt McCoy and Robert Griffin III) has had five winners. The Atlantic Coast Conference (Deshaun Watson twice, Matt Ryan and Jameis Winston) has had four Manning Award winners. Alabama (Bryce Young and Jones) joins LSU (Burrow and Russell), Oklahoma (Murray and Mayfield) and Texas (McCoy and Vince Young) as the only schools with two different winners.
All the Manning Award winners follow in the footsteps of the Mannings themselves. In college, Archie, Peyton and Eli Manning combined for over 25,000 passing yards and 201 touchdowns while playing in 10 bowl games and earning four bowl MVP awards. Archie was the No. 2 pick in the NFL Draft, while both Peyton and Eli were selected No. 1 overall.
