The Manning Award was created by the Allstate Sugar Bowl in 2004 to honor the college football accomplishments of Archie, Peyton and Eli Manning. It is the only quarterback award that includes the candidates' bowl performances in its balloting. Since the Manning Award started recognizing Stars of the Week in 2011, 464 different quarterbacks from 129 schools have been recognized. Sixty-seven players from 66 different schools were honored during the 2021 season.
This week's eight Manning Award Stars of the Week are:
Jayden Daniels, LSU (23-of-32, 349 yards, 3 TDs, 0 INT, QBR: 93.6)
Daniels, who also rushes for 44 yards and three more scores, matches the school-record for total touchdowns and converts 8-of-9 third-down efforts for 173 yards as he leads the Tigers to a critical SEC road win over Florida, 45-35.
Dillon Gabriel, Oklahoma (29-of-42, 403 yards, 2 TDs, 1 INT, QBR: 74.1)
Gabriel, who had missed a game and a half of action (both OU losses) due to injury, returns to action and leads the Sooners to 701 yards of offense as they snapped a three-game losing streak with a 52-42 Big 12 win over No. 19 Kansas.
Hendon Hooker, Tennessee (21-of-30, 385 yards, 5 TDs, 1 INT, QBR: 94.3)
Hooker, who drives the Volunteers 45 yards in 13 seconds to set up the game-winning 40-yard field goal, leads the Vols to the most points scored against Alabama since 1907, as they take down the No. 3 Crimson Tide, 52-49, to snap a 15-game losing streak to their SEC rivals.
K.J. Jefferson, Arkansas (29-of-40, 367 yards, 5 TDs, 0 INT, QBR: 94.5)
Jefferson sets a career-high for passing TDs, including a pair of third-quarter strikes to break open a tight game, as he leads the Razorbacks to 644 total yards and a 12-of-15 success rate on third downs in a 52-35 road win over BYU.
Michael Penix, Washington (36-of-44, 516 yards, 4 TDs, 0 INT, QBR: 90.7)
Penix, who sets the school record for single-game passing yards, has a big third quarter with two long passing TDs and a running score as he leads the Huskies to a 49-39 Pac-12 victory over Arizona.
John Rhys Plumlee, UCF (18-of-22, 373 yards, 4 TDs, 0 INT, QBR: 97.3)
Plumlee, who sets his career-best mark for passing yards while also running for three TDs, becomes the first Knight QB to tally seven TDs in a game since Daunte Culpepper in 1997 as he leads UCF to 737 yards of offense in a 70-13 AAC win over Temple.
Cameron Rising, Utah (30-44, 415 yards, 2 TDs, 0 INT, QBR: 92.5)
Rising also runs for 60 yards and three touchdowns, including a 1-yard plunge with 48 seconds to go followed by a successful two-point conversion run, as the Utes overcame a 14-point deficit in a thrilling 43-42 Pac-12 win over No. 7 USC.
Kyle Vantrease, Georgia Southern (38-of-64, 578 yards, 4 TDs, 1 INT, QBR: 75.3)
Vantrease, who sets a school for passing yards, completes a 14-yard pass on fourth-and-10 to set himself up for a 22-yard game-winning TD pass with 1:10 to go as the Eagles upend No. 25 James Madison, 45-38, in Sun Belt play.
While the Manning Award selected 30 quarterbacks for its preseason
Watch List, additional quarterbacks are expected to be added to the Watch List later in the season. Ten finalists will be selected and the winner is scheduled to be announced following the College Football Playoff National Championship.
In its first 18 years, the Manning Award has recognized the top names in college football. It has honored quarterbacks from 13 different schools and from four different conferences. The Southeastern Conference (Bryce Young, Joe Burrow, Mac Jones, Johnny Manziel, Cam Newton, JaMarcus Russell and Tim Tebow) leads the way with seven Manning Award honorees, while the Big 12 Conference (Kyler Murray, Baker Mayfield, Vince Young, Colt McCoy and Robert Griffin III) has had five winners. The Atlantic Coast Conference (Deshaun Watson twice, Matt Ryan and Jameis Winston) has had four Manning Award winners. Alabama (Bryce Young and Jones) joins LSU (Burrow and Russell), Oklahoma (Murray and Mayfield) and Texas (McCoy and Vince Young) as the only schools with two different winners.
All the Manning Award winners follow in the footsteps of the Mannings themselves. In college, Archie, Peyton and Eli Manning combined for over 25,000 passing yards and 201 touchdowns while playing in 10 bowl games and earning four bowl MVP awards. Archie was the No. 2 pick in the NFL Draft, while both Peyton and Eli were selected No. 1 overall.
