Allstate Sugar Bowl Cross Country

The Allstate Sugar Bowl sponsors a pair of cross country invitationals. It took on sponsorship of the Allstate Sugar Bowl Cross Country Festival, hosted by Loyola University, in the fall of 2015. The Sugar Bowl will also sponsor the 2017 Allstate Sugar Bowl Cross Country Classic, an event which replaces the Metro Cross Country Championships (held from 2014-16, see below). The Bowl has also sponsored the Louisiana All-State Teams for cross country since 2008.

 

Allstate Sugar Bowl Cross Country Classic

The Allstate Sugar Bowl Cross Country Classic, a new event which replaced the Metro Cross Country Championships (held from 2014-16, see below), was held on Saturday, September 30 in New Orleans City Park. Dominican High School and Holy Cross School won the girls’ and boys’ championships, respectively. The event featured 253 athletes from 31 schools.

The Dominican girls were paced by overall winner Kelsey Major, an eighth-grader who covered the five-kilometer course in 19:13.2, nearly 20 seconds faster than her closest competition. Dominican placed four other runners in the top 15 to win the event with 41 points. Vandebilt Catholic was second with 62 points while St. Paul’s Episcopal (Mobile, Ala.) took third with 85 points. McGehee (107) and Lusher (117) rounded out the top five.

On the boys’ side, a balanced Holy Cross squad registered five of the top 16 finishers to take the title with 47 points. St. Paul’s of Covington took second place with 58 points. Brother Martin, which was led by the top two overall finishers – individual winner Hunter Appleton (15:41.9) and Hayden Courrege (16:03.2) – finished third with 66 points. John Curtis (88) and Jesuit (163) completed the top five.

Allstate Sugar Bowl Cross Country Festival

Tulane swept the men’s and women’s races at the third annual Allstate Sugar Bowl cross Country Festival held on September 9, 2017, at Lafreniere Park. The Green Wave posted six of the top 10 finishers on the men’s side while it’s women’s team dominated with five of the top six runners.

In addition to the collegiate races, the Allstate Sugar Bowl Cross Country Festival featured divisions for high school varsity, high school junior varsity and middle schoolers. Over 500 runners competed in the event.

Tulane’s men tallied 18 points, followed by event host Loyola with 30 points. Spring Hill (34 points) was third while UNO (54) and Southern (75) rounded out the top five. On the women’s side, Tulane finished with 20 points, followed by Spring Hill (23), Xavier (39) and Mississippi Valley State (51). Jackson State and Tougaloo tied for fifth with 74 points each.

The top male finisher was Tulane’s Moses Aloiloi, who covered the five-kilometer course in 16:05.1. Mississippi Valley’s Scolasticah Kemei won the women’s 5K with a time of 18:48.7.

Metro Cross Country Championships

The Allstate Sugar Bowl sponsored a Metro Cross Country Championship for the New Orleans area from 2014-16. Dominican won all three of the girls’ championships during that stretch, while the boys’ titles were captured by John Curtis, Brother Martin and St. Paul’s.

 

Allstate Sugar Bowl Cross Country All-Louisiana Teams

In addition to sponsoring the Track & Field Classic, the Allstate Sugar Bowl also sponsors the Louisiana Cross Country All-Louisiana Teams as recognized by the Louisiana Track and Field Coaches Association. The teams is based on the top 25 performances, regardless of classification, at the LHSAA State Cross Country Championship Meet.
