Noonan, a former weightlifter at Holy Cross, was selected as the Sugar Bowl Athlete of the Month for August of 1980. Noonan, a 19-year-old competing in the 131-pound weight class at the Teenage National Weight-Lifters Championship in Chicago set records in the bench press (381 pounds) and in the squat (611 pounds).
