Sugar Bowl

Daryl Moreau - January 1979 Athlete of the Month
Basketball, De La Salle High School

Moreau, an 18-year old forward for the De La Salle basketball team, was selected as the Sugar Bowl Athlete of the Month for January of 1979. Moreau was cited for connecting on 126 consecutive free throws over two years in competition. The 6-2, 175-pounder began his streak during the 1977-78 season with 34 straight points from the free throw line. The streak ended on Jan. 9 when the 18-year old missed the last of his six attempts against Jesuit. His best game from the free throw line came on Nov. 17 of this season when he buried 12 straight charity shots against Ehret. The second-best was 10 in a row against Country Day later the same month. His 126 straight free throws breaks all existing records from high school through the professional ranks. The former high school mark was held by Denton Jones of Central High in Knoxville, Tenn. (1969-70); the college record is 95 by Bob Lloyd of Rutgers (1962), and the NBA standard is 60 by Rick Barry, then of the Golden State Warriors (1977).
