McDonald, the star forward for the Carver High School basketball team, was selected as the Sugar Bowl Athlete of the Month for January of 1983. McDonald, a 6-4 junior, led the Rams to a 6-1 record in the month, averaging 35.1 points per game in the stretch.

He edged UNO's Mark Petteway for the honor.
