Sugar Bowl

Kim Mulkey, Louisiana Tech Basketball

Outstanding Female Athlete, Louisiana, 1982

Louisiana Tech guard Kim Mulkey was named the 1982 Outstanding Female Athlete for the State of Louisiana by the Sugar Bowl's ports Awards Committee.

Mulkey, a 5-4 spark plug guard for the Lady Techsters averaged 6.7 points per game, 1.8 rebounds, and seven assists a game last season as the Techsters rolled up a 31 and 2 record, falling just short of taking their third straight national title. Tech's only two losses in 1982-83 were at the hands of Southern California, which beat them once during the season and again in the NCAA championship game. The 69-67 loss to Southern Cal ended the championship reign for the Lady Techsters, and the season that also
saw them compile the longest winning streak in the nation.

Mulkey's contribution included leading the team in assists with 218, and five games in which she had 11 assists. She hit for 16 points in two games during the year, once against South Carolina, and once against California State, Long Beach.
The Tickfaw, La., native closed her junior season third on the career assists list at Louisiana Tech with 616, and 14th on the career points chart with 661.

The New Orleans Sports Awards Committee began in 1957 when James Collins spearheaded a group of sports journalists to form a sports awards committee to immortalize local sports history. For 13 years, the committee honored local athletes each month. In 1970, the Sugar Bowl stepped in to sponsor and revitalize the committee, leading to the creation of the New Orleans Sports Hall of Fame in 1971, honoring 10 legends from the Crescent City in its first induction class. While adding the responsibility of selecting Hall of Famers, the committee has continued to recognize Sugar Bowl Athletes of the Month.
