Sugar Bowl Quote Central 2025-26
Chambliss, Carneiro Lead Ole Miss to 39-34 Allstate Sugar Bowl Victory Over SEC Rival Georgia
You won't find two hotter toddies than Trinidad Chambliss and Lucas Carneiro. They've etched their names in Ole Miss football history.
Carneiro, Ole Miss junior kicker, booted the longest two field goals in Allstate Sugar Bowl history Thursday night. But it won't be that one that he – or Ole Miss fans – will remember.
Carneiro hit a 47-yard field goal with six seconds left to lift the sixth-seeded Rebels to a 39-34 victory against third-seeded Georgia in the 92nd Sugar Bowl and a College Football Playoff quarterfinal in the Caesars Superdome before a sellout crowd of 68,371 on New Year's Night 2026.
The win moves Ole Miss (13-1) to the College Football Playoff semifinals where the Rebels will meet Miami in the Fiesta Bowl on Jan. 8. It also avenged a regular season 43-35 loss to the Bulldogs.
Hard to imagine a sweeter win in Ole Miss football history; a second playoff victory, revenge against an SEC rival and a trip to the CFP semifinals. It was also Ole Miss head coach Pete Golding's second victory since becoming the Rebels leader. Golding, a Hammond, Louisiana, native, who was the Rebels defensive coordinator in 2025, was named head coach after Lane Kiffin left at the end of the season for the LSU job.
Golding said the Ole Miss fans made Thursday's game feel like a home contest because they were so loud. He said he's glad to have a chance to continue in the playoff now. And it was special to win this one considering how close Hammond is to New Orleans.
"I was super grateful for the opportunity that our chancellor and (Ole Miss athletic director) Keith (Carter) gave me to step in with these guys,'' Golding said. "A lot of our guys put a lot of work into this in our building and our community and our fan base and recruit really good players like these dudes on a daily basis. I don't want it to end.
"And, yeah, definitely special being 35 miles away. My brother lives in New Orleans. A bunch of family. A bunch of Hammond High boys here tonight. Absolutely, we love playing in the Dome but more importantly for these guys to have an opportunity for a championship, and that's the one thing that's been here for three years. I know everybody else was doubting us but the goal for this guy to come this year was to compete for a championship. That's something we're going to do on a consistent basis.''
Carneiro booted a Sugar Bowl record 56-yarder in the first half. But the last one was bigger, much bigger. It capped a 45-yard, 7-play drive in the waning seconds of the game, led by Chambliss, the Rebs quarterback who was named the Miller-Digby Offensive MVP. His 40-yard pass to receiver De'Zhaun Stribling on third-and-5 at Ole Miss' 30 put the ball at the Georgia 30, setting up Carneiro's game-winner.
Ole Miss got the final points of the game on a safety with one second left on the ensuing kickoff.
Chambliss passed for 362 and two touchdowns, completing 30 of 46 passes. including a Sugar Bowl record 13 straight completions at one point. Harrison Wallace was his favorite target, catching nine passes for 156 yards and a touchdown. Stribling had seven catches for 122 yards.
"Didn't play my best (in the fourth quarter of the first Georgia game),'' Chambliss said. "I wanted to redeem myself. Just trusted my guys. Our coaches put us in a great position and we just executed.''
The Rebels torched Georgia's vaunted defense for 473 yards. The teams combined for 73 points and 816 yards in a thrilling back-and-forth adventure that wasn't decided until the final play. Ole Miss defensive tackle Will Echoles was the Miller-Digby Defensive MVP, registering five tackles, two tackles for loss and two pass breakups.
"I thought (Ole Miss players) responded the right way,'' Golding said of Ole Miss' second half rally. "Definitely didn't play our cleanest football in the first half. Kind of challenged them at halftime. Said, 'Look, we were up nine on these guys going into the fourth quarter of the last game.' They responded like they did all year. A lot of grit and they love playing football.''
It was the second straight season Georgia (12-2), the SEC champion, saw its season end in the playoff quarterfinals in the Sugar Bowl. Last year, the Bulldogs fell to Notre Dame.
But the Dawgs didn't go down with a fight. They trailed by 10 with 9:02 left to play but rallied to tie the game when Peyton Woodring booted a 24-yard field goal with 56 seconds left, which capped a 12-play, 58-yard drive.
The Rebels took a 34-24 lead with 9:02 to play that was keyed by a fourth down stop of Georgia at its 34. Ole Miss Suntarine Perkins sacked Georgia quarterback Gunner Stockton, who fumbled with the Rebels recovering at the Dawgs' 24. Two plays later, Chambliss passed 13 yards to Wallace for the touchdown and the 10-point lead.
The Dawgs answered with a 75-yard, 6-play drive that cut Ole Miss' lead to 34-31 with 7:03 to play. Stockton passed 18 yards to Zachariah Branch for the touchdown to cap the effort.
Ole Miss took the lead with 11:29 left in the fourth quarter with an 8-play, 75-yard drive with Chambliss leading the way. He passed for 64 yards on the drive and ran once for 4 yards. Lacy capped the drive with a 6-yard run. Chambliss passed to Wallace for the 2-point conversion and the Rebels led 27-24 with 11:29 to play.
The Rebels, trailing 21-12 at the half, cut Georgia's lead to two, 21-19, with 4:51 left in the third quarter. Lacy capped a 63-yard drive with a 7-yard run. The key play came when Ole Miss opted to go for it facing fourth-and-3 at the Georgia 44. Chambliss passed to Wallace for 36 yards to the Dawgs 8.
Georgia answered with a 56-yard, 10-play drive that resulted in a 37-yard field goal by Peyton Woodring to extend their lead to 24-19 with 30 seconds left in the third quarter.
Stockton passed for 203 yards and a touchdown and rushed for 20 yards and two touchdowns.
The Bulldogs enjoyed a 21-12 after an entertaining first half in which Sugar Bowl history was made twice.
The Rebels outgained Georgia in the first half, 234-190, but their inability to convert on third down and a costly fumble put them behind on the scoreboard.
Georgia took a 14-12 lead with 4:05 left in the second quarter with a 12-play, 75-yard drive that included two key third-down conversions. The second and decisive came as the Dawgs faced third-and-12 at the Ole Miss 27. Stockton dropped to pass and was forced to scramble to his left where he dumped the ball to Cash Jones, who slipped two Ole Miss tackles and ran to the Rebels' 1 before being stopped. On the next play, Stockton ran in for the touchdown.
On the ensuing series, the Rebels committed their first turnover of the game. Rebs running back Kewan Lacy appeared to have a first down at the Ole Miss 47 after a 5-yard run. But Georgia defensive lineman Elijah Griffin forced a fumble and Dawgs Daylen Everette scooped up the ball and returned it 47 yards for a touchdown and a 21-12 Georgia lead with 3:34 to play. The return was a Sugar Bowl record for a fumble return for a touchdown.
The Rebels took a 6-0 first quarter lead thanks to two Sugar Bowl record field goals by Carneiro. His first, a 55-yard effort, came with 5:47 left in the first quarter. Minutes later he added a yard with a 56-yard kick and new record with 2:13 left in the initial quarter.
Georgia took the lead with a run dominating drive of 75 yards on seven plays in the second quarter. Running back Nate Frazier rushed for 44 yards on the drive and Georgia ran on six of the seven plays for 62 yards. Stockton ran 12 yards up the middle to cap the drive with the score and give Georgia a 7-6 lead with 13:37 left in the second quarter.
Ole Miss answered with an impressive 75-yard, eight-play drive engineered by Chambliss. He passed for 57 yards and rushed for 5. He passed 3 yards to tight end Luke Hasz for the score. The Rebels elected to go for two but Chambliss was stopped short on a run and the Rebels led 12-7 with 10:33 left in the first half.
Stockton passed for 105 yards on the first half and rushed for both offensive touchdowns.
