John Aruns Callery was a member of the Sugar Bowl Committee and the Greater New Orleans Sports Awards Committee. He was one of the primary people behind the Sugar Bowl taking over sponsorship of the Sports Awards Committee and then establishing the Greater New Orleans Sports Hall of Fame in 1971.

In his role as a Sugar Bowl Committee member, he was instrumental in forming the relationship between the Sugar Bowl and the Southeastern Conference.
