The Manning Award was created by the Allstate Sugar Bowl in honor of the college football accomplishments of Archie, Peyton and Eli Manning. It is the only quarterback award that includes the candidates’ bowl performances in its balloting.
This week’s eight Manning Award Stars of the Week are:
Alan Bowman, Texas Tech (43-of-59, 605 yards, 5 TDs, 0 INT, QBR: 86.6)
Bowman records a Big 12 freshman record for passing yards, and misses the FBS national record by six yards, as he leads the Red Raiders to a 63-49 victory over previously undefeated Houston.
Anthony Brown, Boston College (16-of-25, 304 yards, 5 TDs, 0 INT, QBR: 90.9)
Brown tallies career-bests in passing yards and touchdowns as he keeps the Eagles undefeated with a 41-34 ACC road win over previously undefeated Wake Forest.
Taylor Cornelius, Oklahoma State (15-of-26, 243 yards, 1 TD, 0 INT, QBR: 89.2)
Cornelius also runs for 41 yards and a pair of touchdowns as the Cowboys remain undefeated with a 44-21 victory over No. 17 Boise State.
Nick Fitzgerald, Mississippi State (14-of-21, 243 yards, 2 TDs, 0 INT, QBR: 89.5)
Fitzgerald also rushes for 107 yards and four touchdowns, the second time he’s rushed for four scores in a game, as the bulldogs roll to a 56-10 win over Louisiana.
Dwayne Haskins, Ohio State (24-of-38, 344 yards, 2 TDs, 0 INT, QBR: 89.4)
Haskins also adds a rushing touchdown as he keys the Buckeyes in an impressive 40-28 victory over No. 15 TCU in Arlington.
Tyree Jackson, Buffalo (21-of-26, 325 yards, 3 TDs, 0 INT, QBR: 98.1)
Jackson delivers a 75-yard touchdown pass in the fourth quarter as the Bulls remain undefeated by holding off MAC rival Eastern Michigan, 35-28.
Kyler Murray, Oklahoma (21-of-29, 348 yards, 3 TDs, 0 INT, QBR: 91.9)
Murray, who also paces the Sooners with 77 rushing yards, sets his career-high in passing yards for the third straight game as he leads Oklahoma to a 37-27 Big 12 road win over Iowa State.
Malik Rosier, Miami (13-of-23, 205 yards, 2 TDs, 0 INT, QBR: 92.6)
Rosier, who also rushes eight times for 80 yards and three touchdowns, becomes the first Hurricane with three rushing and two passing TDs in their ACC tenure, in a 49-24 road victory over Toledo.
While the Manning Award selected 30 quarterbacks for its preseason Watch List, additional quarterbacks are expected to be added to the Watch List later in the season. The 10 finalists for the honor will be announced on Thursday, November 29 and the winner is scheduled to be announced following the College Football Playoff National Championship.
In its first 14 years, the Manning Award has recognized the top names in college football. It has honored quarterbacks from 12 different schools and from four different conferences. The Big 12 Conference (Baker Mayfield, Vince Young, Colt McCoy and Robert Griffin III) joins the Southeastern Conference (Johnny Manziel, Cam Newton, JaMarcus Russell and Tim Tebow) and the Atlantic Coast Conference (Deshaun Watson twice, Matt Ryan and Jameis Winston) with four Manning Award winners each, while Texas is the only school with two different winners (McCoy and Young).
All the Manning Award winners follow in the footsteps of the Mannings themselves. In college, Archie, Peyton and Eli Manning combined for over 25,000 passing yards and 201 touchdowns while playing in 10 bowl games and earning four bowl MVP awards. Archie was the No. 2 pick in the NFL Draft, while both Peyton and Eli were selected No. 1 overall.
In addition to the Manning Award’s yearly honor, each week during the regular season, eight quarterbacks are recognized as Manning Quarterbacks of the Week. Sixty-three players from 60 different schools were honored during the 2017 season.
