Chapelle Bowler Elizabeth Hamilton Earns Sugar Bowl Athlete of the Month

Chipmunk Star Posted Career Performances to Capture State Championships

Elizabeth Hamilton - Chapelle - April 2025

NEW ORLEANS (May 6, 2025) – Elizabeth Hamilton, a star bowler for Archbishop Chapelle High School, has been selected as April's Allstate Sugar Bowl Athlete of the Month presented by LCMC Health. Athletes of the month have been selected by the New Orleans Sports Awards Committee since 1957. The athlete must be a native of the greater New Orleans area or must compete for a team in the metropolitan region to be eligible.

Hamilton delivered two state championships in a 48-hour span with huge performances. In the LHSAA girls' team championship on April 9 in Gonzales, Hamilton was named the match's Outstanding Bowler as the Chipmunks claimed their second state bowling title with a 20-7 victory over two-time defending champion Dutchtown. Hamilton had a career-best 702 series on games of 243, 227 and 232 as the Chipmunks set a state record with a 3,444 team series and ended the Lady Griffs' three-year, 45-match winning streak.

In the state singles tournament on April 11 in Baton Rouge, Hamilton topped her team finals performance with a 715 series on games of 226, 255 and 234, finishing 65 pins ahead of the rest of the 48-bowler field to earn the No. 1 seed in the stepladder finals. In the final match against her teammate, Olivia Bares, Hamilton delivered three strikes in the 10th frame for a 203-192 victory.

"I just feel so loved by everyone," Hamilton said after her second state title. "Hearing them all cheer for me. I feel like Olivia and I, I feel like we really do share that win together. We did it for the fans; we did it for our best friends from Brother Martin, from Jesuit. We did it for New Orleans; this isn't just a me-win or a Chapelle win, this is a New Orleans win."

Hamilton won the honor over five other standout area athletes.
  • Kade Anderson, a St. Paul's School graduate was spectacular in April for the LSU baseball team. The sophomore lefthander posted a 3-1 record in April while striking out 41 batters in 26 and a third innings. On April 3, he tossed a complete-game shutout in a 2-0 win over Oklahoma striking out 14 and allowing just five hits with two walks. For the season, Anderson has a 6-1 record with a 3.57 ERA and 114 strikeouts (second in the SEC) in 70.2 innings (second in the SEC). Opponents are hitting just .218 against him and he has walked just 19 batters.
  • Jonathan Arena led the Archbishop Shaw bowling team to an unbeaten season, capped by the Division II state championship in Gonzales. The senior fired a 662 series in the state championship match, an 18-9 victory over Belle Chasse.
  • Jaheene Bell, a sophomore for the Xavier University of Louisiana men's track and field team, repeated as 400-meter hurdles champion (53.17 seconds), and won the 400-meter dash (48.89 seconds) at the Red River Athletic Conference Championships April 25-26 at Tad Gormley Stadium in New Orleans. His 400 hurdles time is the fastest by an athlete in the last 15 Red River meets. He also won the 400 hurdles in a school-record 52.17 seconds April 5 at Southern University's Pelican Relays in Baton Rouge, La. That's an A-qualifying mark for NAIA nationals in May, and it's No. 4 on the NAIA season list of fastest times.
  • Troy Green, had an outstanding month for the Slidell High School baseball team. The senior right-hander posted a 4-0 mark on the mound, recording a 1.11 ERA with 41 strikeouts in 25.1 innings. At the plate, he hit .412 with a .488 OBP. In a key playoff showdown against third-seeded Northwood-Shreveport, Green tossed 6.2 innings of three-hit ball with 12 strikeouts to spark the Tigers to the victory and a trip to the state quarterfinals on May 2-3. Green who has signed to bring his 93 mile-per-hour fastball to LSU Eunice, has a 9-2 record with a 1.07 ERA and 134 strikeouts in 78.2 innings for the season.
  • My-Anh Holmes, once again dominated her competition in the LHSAA Division II state championship bracket for the Willow School tennis team. The senior dropped three games in five matches as she blazed her way to her fourth straight state championship. Holmes posted 6-0, 6-0 wins in the first three rounds of the state tournament before dropping a game to Ben Franklin's Mallory Kymes in the semifinals. Her championship match came against a familiar opponent – her younger sister My-Linh, also of Willow. In a rematch of last year's state final, the elder Holmes prevailed, 6-2, 6-0 (last year's result was 6-1, 6-0). In four years of state title appearances, she has posted a game record of 228-9 in 19 matches. Holmes, who is listed by the U.S. Tennis Association as the top-ranked 18-and-under girls tennis player in Louisiana (and top 50 in the country), has signed to continue her career at UC Santa Barbara in the fall.
