NEW ORLEANS (November 29, 2023) – Fans have selected Garrett Greene of West Virginia as the
Manning Award Quarterback of the Week for the second week in a row. He earned the honor over seven other Manning Award
Stars of the Week in the Allstate Sugar Bowl's online fan voting contest. His back-to-back wins make him the only two-time winner for 2023.
Greene drove West Virginia 80 yards on six plays in 51 seconds, finishing the drive with a 29-yard touchdown pass to Jahiem White with 23 seconds to go to lift the Mountaineers to a 34-31 Big 12 road win over Baylor. The Tallahassee native completed 16-of-25 passes and posted his second straight game with 200 passing yards (269) and 100 rushing yards (103) while throwing for two touchdowns and running for two more.
"This has been a team that has fought all year," West Virginia coach Neal Brown said after the Baylor win. "Garrett Greene is a winner, and I hope our fans appreciate him. He's about all the right things."
Greene has now rushed for 13 touchdowns this year – the most by a West Virginia quarterback since Pat White ran for 14 in 2002.
West Virginia, which was picked to finish last in the Big 12 preseason poll, improved to 8-4 overall with a 6-3 Big 12 record – tied for fourth place in the 14-team conference. They now await their bowl destination, to be announced on Sunday.
Greene's closest competitors in this week's online voting were Joe Milton of Tennessee and N.C. State's Brennan Armstrong. Milton became the first Volunteer with six touchdowns in a game since 2009 as he threw for four scores and ran for two more in a 48-24 SEC win over Vanderbilt. He completed 22-of-33 passes for a career-high 383 yards. Armstrong completed 22-of-31 passes with season-bests of 334 yards and three touchdowns in a 39-20 victory over North Carolina to give the Wolfpack its first five-game ACC winning streak in 50 years.
Manning Award finalists will be announced tomorrow and the winner is scheduled to be announced following the College Football Playoff National Championship.
In its first 19 years, the Manning Award has recognized the top names in college football. It has honored quarterbacks from 14 different schools and from four different conferences. The Southeastern Conference (Stetson Bennett, Bryce Young, Joe Burrow, Mac Jones, Johnny Manziel, Cam Newton, JaMarcus Russell and Tim Tebow) leads the way with eight Manning Award honorees, while the Big 12 Conference (Kyler Murray, Baker Mayfield, Vince Young, Colt McCoy, and Robert Griffin III) has had five winners. The Atlantic Coast Conference (Deshaun Watson twice, Matt Ryan and Jameis Winston) has had four Manning Award winners. Alabama (Bryce Young and Jones), LSU (Burrow and Russell), Oklahoma (Murray and Mayfield), and Texas (McCoy and Vince Young) have each produced a pair of Manning Award winners.
All the Manning Award winners follow in the footsteps of the Mannings themselves. In college, Archie, Peyton and Eli Manning combined for over 25,000 passing yards and 201 touchdowns while playing in 10 bowl games and earning four bowl MVP awards. Archie was the No. 2 pick in the NFL Draft, while both Peyton and Eli were selected No. 1 overall.
