The Manning Award was created by the Allstate Sugar Bowl in 2004 to honor the college football accomplishments of Archie, Peyton and Eli Manning. It is the only quarterback award that includes the candidates' bowl performances in its balloting. Since the Manning Award started recognizing Stars of the Week in 2011, 512 different quarterbacks from 133 schools have been recognized. Sixty players from 58 different schools were honored during the 2022 season while 47 quarterbacks have been recognized so far this year.
This week's eight Manning Award Stars of the Week are:
Bryson Barnes, Utah (14-of-23, 235 yards, 3 TDs, 1 INT, QBR: 79.0)
Barnes, a former walk-on who also runs for 57 yards and a touchdown, sets career-highs for passing yards and TDs and has his biggest play of the night with a 26-yard scramble to set up the game-winning field goal on the final play of the game as the Utes take down No. 18 USC, 34-32, in a Pac-12 road contest.
Thomas Castellanos, Boston College (17-of-29, 255 yards, 0 TD, 1 INT, QBR: 95.4)
Castellanos runs for 128 yards on 13 carries (9.8 ypc) with two rushing TDs while directing the Eagles to 21 unanswered fourth-quarter points as they earn their third straight win with a 38-23 ACC road decision over Georgia Tech.
JT Daniels, Rice (24-of-37, 343 yards, 2 TDs, 0 INT, QBR: 76.2)
Daniels, who goes over 9,000 career passing yards, also runs for a touchdown as the Owls post their largest margin of victory in a conference game since 2013 with a 42-10 win over Tulsa in a CUSA road contest.
Dylan Hopkins, New Mexico (20-of-25, 202 yards, 3 TDs, 0 INT, QBR: 86.6)
Hopkins, who sets the school-record for completion percentage (min. 25 att.), connects on a pair of first-quarter touchdown passes, then adds his third in the third quarter as the Lobos snap the nation's longest active conference losing streak (14) with a 42-21 MW victory over Hawai'i.
Braedyn Locke, Wisconsin (21-of-41, 240 yards, 2 TDs, 0 INT, QBR: 60.7)
Locke, who was making his first career start, connects on a 20-yard touchdown with 7:21 to go to pull the Badgers within three, then tosses a three-yard scoring pass with 27 seconds to go to lift his team to a 25-21 comeback victory over Illinois on the road for their first-ever Big Ten win when trailing by 14 or more in the fourth quarter.
J.J. McCarthy, Michigan (21-of-27, 287 yards, 4 TDs, 0 INT, QBR: 97.7)
McCarthy, who connects on three of his career-high four touchdown passes in the first half, turns in an outstanding performance in leading the Wolverines to a 49-0 blowout victory over state rival Michigan State in a Big Ten road game.
Michael Pratt, Tulane (15-of-21, 194 yards, 3 TDs, 1 INT, QBR: 62.5)
Pratt, who adds 70 rushing yards, darts through the defense for a 19-yard game-winning touchdown with 2:34 to go as the Green Wave celebrates Homecoming with a 35-28 AAC win over North Texas.
Jordan Travis, Florida State (27-of-36, 268 yards, 2 TDs, 1 INT, QBR: 82.6)
Travis, who also runs for 62 yards and a touchdown, sets the school-record for career total offense (9,548 yards) and leads the Seminoles to 21 unanswered fourth-quarter points as they hold off No. 16 Duke, 38-20, in ACC play.
While the Manning Award selected 30 quarterbacks for its preseason
Watch List, additional quarterbacks are expected to be added to the Watch List later in the season. Ten finalists will be selected and the winner is scheduled to be announced following the College Football Playoff National Championship.
In its first 19 years, the Manning Award has recognized the top names in college football. It has honored quarterbacks from 14 different schools and from four different conferences. The Southeastern Conference (Stetson Bennett, Bryce Young, Joe Burrow, Mac Jones, Johnny Manziel, Cam Newton, JaMarcus Russell and Tim Tebow) leads the way with eight Manning Award honorees, while the Big 12 Conference (Kyler Murray, Baker Mayfield, Vince Young, Colt McCoy and Robert Griffin III) has had five winners. The Atlantic Coast Conference (Deshaun Watson twice, Matt Ryan and Jameis Winston) has had four Manning Award winners. Alabama (Bryce Young and Jones), LSU (Burrow and Russell), Oklahoma (Murray and Mayfield), and Texas (McCoy and Vince Young) have each produced a pair of Manning Award winners.
All the Manning Award winners follow in the footsteps of the Mannings themselves. In college, Archie, Peyton and Eli Manning combined for over 25,000 passing yards and 201 touchdowns while playing in 10 bowl games and earning four bowl MVP awards. Archie was the No. 2 pick in the NFL Draft, while both Peyton and Eli were selected No. 1 overall.
