UNO's Erik Thomas Named March Athlete of the Month park
Erik Thomas, the star forwards for the University of New Orleans basketball team, has been selected as the Greater New Orleans Amateur Athlete of the Month for February. Monthly award-winners are chosen in voting by the Greater New Orleans Sports Award Selection Committee, sponsored by the Allstate Sugar Bowl.
A senior forward from Wesley Chapel, Fla., Thomas led UNO to the Southland Conference regular season and tournament championships in March to clinch an automatic bid to the NCAA Tournament. The Privateers were the only Louisiana school to participate in the NCAA Tournament. For the month, he averaged 15.0 points and 11.0 rebounds per game while shooting 47.2% (26-of-55) from the field and 88% (23-of-26) from the line. He also collected an impressive haul of honors during the month as he was selected as the Southland Conference Player of the Year and MVP of the Southland Conference Tournament. In addition, he was named First Team All-District 23 by the NABC, the Louisiana Player of the Year by the Louisiana Sportswriters Association and an Associated Press Honorable Mention All American.
Thomas was selected for the March honor over a state champion in high school basketball and a trio of baseball standouts.
Romin Williams, the third-leading scorer in school history, led Country Day to the Allstate Sugar Bowl/LHSAA Division III Boys' Basketball state championship, crushing top-seed Dunham 70-41 in the title game on March 10 at Lake Charles. After his 26-point performance in the state championship game, he was selected as the title game's Most Outstanding Player. Delgado sophomore second baseman Brandt Broussard closed the month of March with a .516 batting average, posting 33 hits over 18 games including six doubles. LSU senior second baseman Cole Freeman, a graduate of Lakeshore High School, batted .320 in March as he continues to lead the Tigers in hitting. Hunter Williams from Tulane baseball hit .357 for the month of March (30-for-84) with 14 RBI, 13 runs and 12 extra base hits in 21 games.
The Greater New Orleans Sports Selection Committee has been selecting an Amateur Athlete of the Month each month since 1957. The athlete must be a native of the greater New Orleans area or must compete for a team in the metropolitan region in order to be eligible. Each of the monthly award winners will be honored in the summer at the Greater New Orleans Sports Hall of Fame Induction and Awards Ceremony, hosted by the Allstate Sugar Bowl.
