The John Curtis-St. Thomas Aquinas game was tabbed the top interstate matchup of the year in the nation by MaxPreps.com. MaxPreps.com National Football Editor Stephen Spiewak wrote, "John Curtis also has a game against Bergen Catholic, but it's the showdown with St. Thomas Aquinas that fans are most excited about. Both have captured national titles in the last five years and both will be very good in 2013."
Curtis and St. Thomas Aquinas are both ranked in the top 10 nationally in multiple preseason polls. The top ranking for Curtis is No. 3 in the USA Today poll, while St. Thomas Aquinas is rated No. 5 in the XOS Digital preseason poll.
The Curtis-St. Thomas Aquinas game will be broadcast on Fox Sports New Orleans.
This marks the second straight year the Allstate Sugar Bowl Prep Showcase and Curtis have gained recognition in MaxPreps' evaluation as the top interstate game in the country. In last year's Showcase, the Patriots defeated Plant High School (Tampa, Fla.), 33-3, propelling Curtis into national championship contention.
Curtis went on to gain recognition as the consensus national champion last year when seven of the nine national polls, including MaxPreps, ranked the Patriots No. 1. Curtis has won back-to-back Louisiana Class 2A championships, and has now won a record 25 state titles. St. Thomas Aquinas won its third Florida state championship last season, taking the Class 7A title.
"We are deeply appreciative of the Sugar Bowl and the Superdome for giving us the opportunity to play against some of the best competition in the nation," said Curtis Head Coach J. T. Curtis. "We've been looking up to teams like St. Thomas Aquinas for years, and we have great respect for them. This speaks volumes for the quality of high school football here in Louisiana. We're happy to see this kind of recognition for the work that all of our players, past and present, have put into achieving national prominence."
"The Sugar Bowl Committee has demonstrated a strong commitment to high school football over the years, and this sponsorship serves to further showcase that tradition," said Allstate Sugar Bowl CEO Paul Hoolahan. "We are proud to play a part in this event, and we look forward to the possibility of building on that support in the years ahead."
"We are thrilled to play host once again to the Allstate Sugar Bowl Prep Showcase, now in its third year," said Alan Freeman, General Manager of the Mercedes-Benz Superdome, managed by SMG. "We appreciate the generous support of the Sugar Bowl in helping us promote this showcase, which has quickly become one of the ‘must watch' prep football events nationwide."
The mission of the Allstate Sugar Bowl is to sponsor and promote amateur sporting events which will foster revenue and spark economic growth in the city of New Orleans and the state of Louisiana. Through all of its year-round slate of events, the organization has generated over $2 billion of economic impact for the city and the state in the last decade alone.
