NEW ORLEANS – The Allstate Sugar Bowl Chapter of the National Football Foundation/College Football Hall of Fame held its 2016 Awards Luncheon on Monday afternoon in the Bienville Club Room at the Mercedes-Benz Superdome. Thirty-seven local high school football players were recognized for their achievements in the classroom and on the football field. The honorees were chosen from a group of nominated talented scholar athletes from the New Orleans area. Archie Manning, the national chairman of the National Football Foundation and College Football Hall of Fame, recognized each of the 37 student athletes at the event. From that group of 37, six were selected to receive Allstate Sugar Bowl Scholarships for $10,000 each. The scholarship winners were chosen based on essays submitted after being notified of their selection as scholar-athletes.

The six scholarship winners were Nathan Faciane (Lakeshore High School), Chase Jenkins (Northlake Christian School), Victor Quinonez (Brother Martin High School), McColl Simons (Metairie Park Country Day School), William “Briggs” Simpson (St Paul’s School) and Alex Smith (L.W. Higgins High School). Carey Wicker, the President of the Sugar Bowl Committee, recapped their accomplishments and referenced their winning essays prior to presenting each scholarship winner with a commemorative check.

Faciane was a three-sport athlete, lettering in football, baseball and basketball. In football, he played on offense, defense and special teams and excelled at all three. In his scholarship essay, he wrote “I’ve always been underestimated because of my body size, but I have a fire and drive in my heart that keeps me going strong.” But it hasn’t been just sports for which he has needed to remain strong; he has maintained his athletic success and a near-perfect grade-point average despite dealing with challenging family situations and illness within his family. He will continue his education and his football career in the fall at Mississippi College.

Jenkins was a four-year starter on the offensive line and a two-year starter on the defensive line. He earned all-district honors while helping his team to postseason play in all four of his varsity seasons. In addition, he has maintained a perfect grade-point average throughout high school. While his accomplishments are exemplary for any student-athlete, he achieved at this level despite being diagnosed with leukemia in the third grade. It took two and a half long years of treatment for him to heal his body, but much more time to heal his mind and spirit. He credits football for giving him the outlet and training he needed to fully recover. And we credit his perseverance and dedication to excellence for achieving his goals.

Quinonez opened his essay by discussing the many challenges he had growing up, but he was quick to credit his parents, writing, “My dad and mom worked tirelessly and strenuously for as long as I can remember, just so I could receive the best education possible. Through their actions, they taught me that, no matter the situation, perseverance, determination and hard work allow for greater opportunities in the future.” He took those lessons to heart and was selected for his school’s Principal’s Honor Roll in each one of his high school semesters. Despite a career-threatening ankle injury as a junior, he returned to the football field to be a team captain and earn all-district and all-metro honors. He then contributed to his school’s fifth straight state championship in wrestling.

Simons may have been one of busiest high school students in the city. He participated in choir, band, small vocal ensemble, jazz band and school musicals, while also lettering in basketball, track and baseball and earning all-district honors in football – playing both offense and defense, of course. In his essay, this National Honor Society member with a 4.2 grade-point average, who also worked a part-time job in sales, understandably refers to his ability to manage time. But he also referenced adversity, writing “rather than allowing adversity to control my life, what I have come to realize is that it is your reactions to tough times that define your character.”

Simpson referenced adversity as well, mentioning family setbacks, physical challenges and mental challenges. He wrote, “I learned to see challenges as learning opportunities and I have continued to accomplish more than I ever thought I would.” He played five years of football, earning four letters while starting for two years at tight end, earning all-district honors. He has been a member of the honor roll for the last five years and has also been very active in his community. In addition, he accepted multiple volunteer positions in the medical field to help him achieve his goal of one day attending medical school.

Smith was a starting cornerback for his football team and a starting guard for his basketball team. He collected a total of five varsity letters while earning Honor Roll recognition in each of his semesters of high school. Despite losing his mother to a heart attack when he was five years old, he still developed maturity and a tremendous work ethic while being raised by extended family. He has proven himself to be a mentor and role model while serving as a volunteer coach for many years and wrote in his essay, “Not only have I strived to do my best as a scholar-athlete, I have also tried to impart important life lessons and values on the young lives that I have influenced.”

In addition to the high school honorees, two local businessmen were recognized for their contributions to the community and the sport of football.

Edwin R. Murray, a Louisiana Senator for the past 12 years and a former member of the House of Representatives, was recognized for his efforts to establish a Special Fund to enable the state to compete for high-level events and presented with the Contribution to Amateur Football Award. Murray’s bill enabled the Allstate Sugar Bowl to successfully spearhead the region’s successful bid to host the 2020 College Football Playoff National Championship. A lifelong New Orleans resident and a graduate of John F. Kennedy High School, Murray earned his B.A. in political science from Loyola in 1982 and his juris doctor in 1985.

Darryl Berger was presented with this year’s Distinguished American honor. Berger, who for more than 30 years has been at the forefront of major real estate transactions in New Orleans, including developments on the riverfront and in the French Quarter, has served as the chairman of the Board of Tulane, the university’s main governing body since 2013. A native New Orleanian, Berger earned a bachelor of arts degree from Vanderbilt University in 1969. He graduated with a juris doctor from Tulane in 1972, the same year he founded Darryl Berger Investment Corporation. In various roles at Tulane, he has been a key proponent of upgrades to the athletic programs, including the building of the new on-campus football stadium.

The New Orleans Chapter of the National Football Foundation was established in 1971. The Sugar Bowl took over sponsorship of the chapter in 2000.
