Tappin, Reed Named February Amateur Athletes of the Month

NEW ORLEANS (March 9, 1994) – University of Florida freshman Ashley Tappin and East Jefferson High School senior Neil Reed have been named Amateur Athletes of the Month for February by the USF+G Insurance Sugar Bowl Sports Selection Committee.

Greater New Orleans Amateur Athletes of the Month

Tappin, a product of St. Martin’s High School in New Orleans, made big waves at the Southeastern Conference Swimming and Diving Championships last month, winning the 50-meter freestyle event for the Gators in 22.60 and finishing second in the 100 freestyle and third in the 100 butterfly.

Tappin was also a member of four SEC champion relay teams – 200 freestyle, 400 freestyle, 200 medley and 400 medley. The former Pan American Games gold medal winner will compete next at the NCAA Championships in Indianapolis, March 17-19.

In February, Reed paced the East Jefferson basketball team with a 25.2 points per game scoring average while shooting 51 percent from the field. While connecting on 48 percent of his three-point attempts throughout the month, he led East Jefferson to a 6-0 record and to the state’s No. 1 ranking.

Reed, who was recently named the metro area’s Player of the Year by the New Orleans Times-Picayune, will attend Indiana University next fall on an athletic scholarship.

Each month members of the USF&G Insurance Sugar Bowl Sports Selection Committee recognize successful amateur athletes from the New Orleans area.
