Allstate Sugar Bowl Has Many Super Bowl Connections
Fifteen Super Bowl Participants Have Been Part of Sugar Bowl Events
NEW ORLEANS (February 1, 2020) – Fifteen players on rosters for Super Bowl LV (Sunday, February 7, 2021) have connections to the Allstate Sugar Bowl. Eight members of the Kansas City Chiefs and seven Tampa Bay Buccaneers players either played in the Allstate Sugar Bowl, played in other events hosted or sponsored by the Sugar Bowl or were honored by the Sugar Bowl for their amateur athletic accomplishments.
The two Super Bowl participants with the most connections to the Allstate Sugar Bowl are Leonard Fournette and Tyrann Mathieu, both graduates of St. Augustine High School in New Orleans who went on to play football at LSU. Fournette was a two-time winner of the Corbett Award, presented by the Allstate Sugar Bowl to the top amateur athlete in the state of Louisiana – Fournette is the only high school athlete in history to win the honor. Both were honored with the Sugar Bowl’s New Orleans Amateur Athlete of the Year Award (Fournette in 2014 and 2016 and Mathieu in 2012) and both competed as high school athletes in the Allstate Sugar Bowl Track & Field Classic. Mathieu also recorded six tackles and a pair of pass break-ups in the 2012 Allstate BCS Championship game hosted by the Sugar Bowl.
Tampa Bay linebacker Devin White, another former LSU star, was the Corbett Award winner for 2018-19. He and Fournette are two of the 19 NFL players who have been honored by the Sugar Bowl as Louisiana’s top amateur athlete since the award’s inception in 1967.
