Sugar Bowl and Sun Belt Team Up For Education

Allstate Sugar Bowl and Sun Belt Team for Unique Basketball Educational Experience

NEW ORLEANS (February 23, 2018) – Elementary and middle school students across the New Orleans metro area will get an opportunity to learn about the intricacies of basketball in a unique and thought-provoking way when the Sun Belt Conference and the Allstate Sugar Bowl host a series of field trips in conjunction with the upcoming Sun Belt Basketball Tournament presented by First Bank and Trust at Lakefront Arena.

With guidance from Science of Sport, a non-profit dedicated to developing curriculum promoting Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM), one field trip will be held daily from Tuesday, March 6 through Friday, March 9.

Each field trip will begin at 9 a.m. and students will learn about basketball positions, the geometry of the court, the physics behind shooting, as well as understanding how nutrition and hydration impact performance.

After the educational sessions are completed, students can take in a game of the Sun Belt Basketball Tournament – with games scheduled to start at 11:30 a.m. each day.

Registration is $5 per student and includes the educational seminar, a ticket to the game, and lunch.

The 2018 Sun Belt Conference Men’s and Women’s Basketball Championships presented by First Bank and Trust are set for March 6-11 with 12 men’s teams and 12 women’s teams vying for Sun Belt tournament titles and automatic bids to the NCAA Division I Men’s and Women’s Basketball Championships.

Single-session tickets are $15 for adults and $5 for children ages 5-12. A children’s ticket also includes a hot dog and a drink. Each session consists of two games, with the exception of the men’s and women’s championship games on Sunday, March 11.

In addition to the games and the STEM field trips, the conference’s annual Dribble Drive, a part of the Sun Belt Sports Fest, is scheduled for Saturday, March 10 beginning at 11 a.m. at Lakefront Arena in New Orleans. The Sun Belt Sports Fest takes place from 9 a.m. to noon on the Lakefront Arena grounds.

Children ages 3-12 are welcome to join in on the fun and dribble their basketballs starting from around the venue grounds to inside Lakefront Arena where the championship games will be taking place. Each participant will receive a free t-shirt, a free basketball and two tickets to the March 10 men’s semifinal games slated for 11:30 a.m. and 2 p.m.
