Sugar Bowl and Manning Award Well-Represented on SI Preview Covers park
The Allstate Sugar Bowl and the Manning Award, the annual college football quarterback award sponsored by the Sugar Bowl, are well-represented on the five college football preview covers being published this year by Sports Illustrated.
AJ McCarron from the University of Alabama was the Offensive Most Valuable Player of the Allstate BCS National Championship hosted by the Sugar Bowl after leading Alabama to the title on Jan. 9 in the Superdome. One week earlier, Michigan’s Denard Robinson helped the Wolverines to victory in the 78th Allstate Sugar Bowl Classic in the Superdome.
From a Manning Award standpoint, two of the three finalists for last year’s award are featured on covers as both Landry Jones from Oklahoma and Matt Barkley from Southern California earned recognition. The fifth cover features West Virginia quarterback Geno Smith, who joined Barkley and McCarron, as well as Archie Manning and his sons, Peyton, Eli and Cooper, as counselors at July’s Manning Passing Academy held in Thibodaux, La. All five of the quarterback “cover-boys” are on the Watch List for the 2012-13 Manning Award.
The 79th annual Sugar Bowl Classic will be played on Wednesday, January 2, 2013 at the Mercedes-Benz Superdome. The Manning Award, now in its ninth year, will announce its finalists on Wednesday, Nov. 28.
