Youth Football & Cheer Clinic
The Allstate Sugar Bowl has been involved with providing learning opportunities and supporting clinics in many sports, including football, for many years. This summer, the Sugar Bowl will once again team up with the R&L Carriers New Orleans Bowl host and sponsor a Cheer and Football Clinic on Saturday, July 22 in New Orleans East.
The clinic will be held at the Joe Brown Park football field and will be free for all kids ages 5-14. The Cheer and Football Clinic will feature coaches and student-athletes from the Sun Belt Conference as well as coaches from other area schools. Former members of the Saints and Pelicans dance teams will coordinate the cheerleading aspect of the event.
After being welcomed to the event with a basic breakfast, the aspiring football players will receive instruction on football-related actives and drills, while cheer clinic participants will learn cheerleading basics and routines which contributed to an end-of-the-day performance. Approximately 400 young athletes are expected to take part in the day’s activities.
The Allstate Sugar Bowl initially joined with the R&L Carriers New Orleans Bowl and NCAA Football’s Youth Initiative in 2007 to sponsor a free football clinic in New Orleans. The NCAA Football Youth Initiative made a $750,000 commitment to help re-build the Katrina-devastated New Orleans Recreation Department’s youth football league in the form of clinics for coaches, players and officials; uniforms; balls; equipment; and the NORD postseason banquet, which is held annually in December.
The local bowl games have continued hosting free youth clinics on an annual basis; in 2015, they welcomed the Sun Belt Conference to the event as part of its media day activities.
